She’s been called ‘the most important woman in American political history.’ She’s Nancy Patricia Pelosi — twice-elected to the role of Speaker of the House of Representatives and instrumental in the passing of the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank consumer protection act and the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell – has represented California’s 12 th Congressional district since assuming the office in 1987. The 17-term (and counting!) representative has fought for the rights of many. She voted against the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, and was given a 100% rating by the Human Rights Campaign in 2006. While she has come under fire over the three-decades in Congress, she has remained steadfast to her principles, which earned her the John F. Kennedy Library’s 2019 Profile in Courage Award. Whether you support her, despise her, or wish she would lean a little more left, there’s one thing that’s for certain: Nancy Pelosi has had an incredible effect on American politics.
